MORE

From the Sidelines

Granted it’s only a 10-9 record, but it’s OK to be excited Royals fans.

I am a Tigers’ fan, Detroit that is, (settle down, Jayhawkers), so of course I want them to do better than the Royals.

However, after moving to Overland Park in high school, I developed a “like” for them.

Heading to Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City during a cool summer night, or even a sunny afternoon, was a great time.

Friday nights included $1 hot dogs and soft drinks, as well as fireworks.

The fountains behind the outfield wall always are fun to watch, and even if you paid for the cheap seats, there usually were better ones you could sneak down to sit in.

Not only has the stadium upgraded and become more attractive — a “huge-screen” TV monitor, monster HD scoreboard, “party seats” in the outfield, and seating in center field — the Royals are winning.

The Royals and Chiefs are the only teams Kansans can call “theirs,” and the Chiefs aren’t exactly winning right now.

The stadium actually is located in Missouri, but Kansas is in the name.

Now in its 40th season, the Royals have won exactly one World Series — in 1985.

Do you remember where you were then? Maybe so, but I bet you were sporting bigger hair than today.

Since then, they have had only six winning seasons with only one coming since 1993.

Don’t max out your credit card with World Series tickets yet.

They have a long way to go.

However, usually after 19 games into the baseball season, Royals’ fans are reading more about the Chiefs’ draft picks than baseball box scores.

The pitching on this team is legit. Their ace, Zach Greinke, is 4-0 and has not allowed an earned run this season.

Obviously, he will not keep up those numbers, but he is showing no signs of regressing.

The offense is a weak spot for K.C., but if the team could add one bat with a trade, it could win the up-for-grabs AL Central Division.

While I still would like to see my Tigers (who have not won it all since 1984) win, a battle with the Royals for the division crown would be fun to watch.

So, all of you Kansas City fans, stop drooling over the recent NFL draft, and focus on the Boys in Blue.

If they are out of it in September, football still will be there.
