COLUMN:   From the Sidelines

December is a great month.

Unless of course you count cold weather, Kansas wind, snow drifts, icy roads, insanely high heating bills, darkness at 5 p.m., and crazy shoppers.

However, it seems the month has a holiday for everyone.

For my family it’s Christmas, and it’s my favorite holiday of the year. (Sadly, it probably has something to do with the fact that although I say I am getting too old, I still like getting gifts.)

While shopping can get out of hand, and the stress that comes with Christmas is as welcome as a negative-degree wind chill, it does seem to bring out the best in people.

So, with Christmas fast-approaching I have devised another wish list I am hoping comes true.

With all the turmoil going on right now, this list is going to be lighthearted because the country and the world need something a little more powerful than this to get back on track.

  • No more activity cancelations has to be on top of my list. High school wrestling, basketball, and concerts already have been postponed, as well as some middle school events. It’s not even January!
  • I wish “Boston Legal” had not gone off the air. It was one of my favorite shows, and it wasn’t even on ESPN.
  • I wish high school wrestling was more popular. It doesn’t fit into America’s stereotypical sports scene, but the determination and will of the athletes are unbelievable. It may not be as popular as football or basketball, but it has seniority on almost every other sport, dating back to the days of ancient Greeks.
  • It would be nice if basketball was more like the movie, “Hoosiers.” Not the high socks, short shorts, and lack of minority players, but the art of the team game. Dunks are great and fun to watch, but is there any better sound than a high-arching, 15-foot jumper that hits nothing but net?
  • I wish there wasn’t a 33-day break between the end of the football regular season, and the final bowl games. The 17-day break between MHS’ regular season basketball games is long enough.
  • I wish KU had not of lost to UMass.
  • I also wish KU had not of lost to Syracuse, but at least that was respectable.
  • I hope the second semester is kind to the Warrior winter sports teams, and I think it will. The talent on the boys’ and girls’ basketball squads, and wrestlers is high, and nearly a month to fine-tune those skills is just what they need.
  • And finally, I wish that everyone reading this has a great holiday!
