Ft. Riley company signs contract with Centre

Staff writer

A group of nine soldiers from the 299th Brigade Support Battalion at Fort Riley Army Base came to Centre May 15 for the official signing of a community partnership pact with the district.

The agreement was signed by Superintendent Jerri Kemble, Counselor Mallory Jacobs, Commanding Lieutenant General Eric M. Schwartz, and Bryon Starks, Command Sgt. Major.

“Thank you for serving our country and spending time with our students and staff,” Kemble told the soldiers.

Members of the battalion have been coming occasionally to Centre school since November. They eat lunch with students and play basketball and other games.

On May 15, the soldiers conducted relay races and physical training with students after the signing.

According to Jacobs, they plan to provide help with maintenance work during the summer, if needed, and will return this fall for more activities.

“They want to be a presence in the community,” Jacobs said. “They love the Centre Perk, and always stop by for a drink there.”
