Gary David Helmer

Services for Gary David Helmer, 78, Marion, who died Oct. 31 at St. Luke Living Center, will be 10:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at Marion Christian Church, with the Rev. Carl Helm presiding. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery

Family will gather with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at Yazel-Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion.

He was born May 5, 1941, in Marion, the son of David D. Helmer Jr. and Eldena Schlotthauer Helmer.

He was a 1959 graduate of Marion High School.

He married Dorothy “Carol” Nice on June 3, 1961, in Marion. She preceded him in death Sept. 24, 1993.

He married Beverly Ehrlich in 1998. She preceded him in death April 9, 2012.

He was a farmer most of his adult life and worked, for a time, as a feed dealer.

A member of Marion Christian Church, he was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed his vintage cars.

His greatest joy was his family which includes: children Michelle (and husband Steve) Glahn of Marion, Angela (and husband Michael) Spielman of Baldwin City, and Dwayne Helmer (and Scott Garvey) of Shawnee; grandchildren Tim (and wife Heather) Glahn and Janet (and husband Brian) Klenda; great-grandchildren Brenden, Bentley, and Isabelle Glahn and Kenzie and Braxton Klenda; his brother Ladd (and wife Luci) Helmer of Marion; several nieces and nephews.

His parents and brother Darrel Helmer preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established with Marion Christian Church, Good Shepherd Hospice, and St. Luke Hospital Foundation.
