With 27 players reporting to early season basketball practices, Goessel High School boys’ basketball coach Curtis Guhr is happy to see depth and experience in key positions this year.
“We have four of the five starters from last year returning for the 2013 season,” he said. “These four seniors will anchor this year’s team and I have a lot of depth waiting to come off the bench.”
Davis Cook, a 6-foot-4-inch senior post player, will be depended on to score from fifteen feet and closer. He averaged 7.1 rebounds per game last year along with 8.0 points per game.
Senior Nic Buller used long range baskets effectively while recording 7.5 points per game last year to go along with 4.3 rebounds per game.
Trey Schmidt, senior point guard, used his slashing style to accumulate 5.2 points per game and also 2.0 assists per game.
Shane Goerzen, a senior at 5-3, used his speed and quickness to average 1.50 steals per game and score 5.0 points per game.
Coming off the bench will likely be Brian Hiebert in the post position, and Reece Hiebert and Tyler Schulz at forward. Ben Wiens, Zach Showalter, and Dan Smucker will be pushing the action from guard postions.
“Our depth will be an advantage,” said Guhr. “We have many available combinations to put on the floor.”
Last year the Bluebirds finished with a 5-3 record in the Wheat State League and a 12-11 record overall. Guhr expects the top teams in the League to be Solomon, Little River, Goessel, Centre and Peabody-Burns. The season begins on November 30 with a home game with Inman.
