Girls defeat Nickerson

Boys lose to Panthers

It was a good news-bad news kind of Tuesday night for Marion High School when the varsity girls overpowered Nickerson by a score of 72-59. Unfortunately, the boys’ varsity team didn’t fare as well, being defeated 53-37.

The Lady Warriors were on fire on the Panther’s court, hitting six three-pointers throughout the game.

The top scorer was Kayley Heerey with 25 points and seven assists. Close behind was Lindsay Hett with an impressive 22 points. Julia Zeiner contributed 16 points.

The game began as an even match, with both teams at 14 points after the first quarter. After that, it was all Marion when the Lady Warriors outscored their opponent 48-27.

The team now is an impressive 7-2 in league-play and 11-7 overall.

The MHS varsity boys’ team jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the game but Nickerson went on a 16-3 run, making it a 16-8 ball game, and Marion never caught up.

Isaac Hett was held to nine points and four rebounds. Luke Gordon had seven points and nine rebounds.

With this loss, the Warriors are 2-7 in league-play and 5-13 overall.

JV teams split

The JV girls’ team lost 43-30. Kristen Geis was the high scorer with 10 points.

It was a different story for the JV boys as they blind-sided Nickerson, 71-49.

All four teams have two games remaining in regular season play. They’ll play county rival Hillsboro Friday evening on the Trojans’ home court. On Tuesday, MHS will play Smoky Valley at home.
