Girls fall to Cardinals

Staff writer

The Marion High School girls basketball team lost 45-30 Tuesday to Sedgwick in Marion.

The Cardinals went on an 8-0 run to open the game and the closest the Warriors got to Sedgwick in the game was a 7-point deficit in the third quarter.

With center Whitney Gordon on the bench following three fouls for the majority of the second quarter, the Warriors forced two turnovers, a tie up that rewarded Marion with the ball, and a long rebound that guard Erin Meierhoff converted into a layup. They trailed, 22-12, at halftime.

“We switched to a zone,” coach Randy Savage said. “We played well out of the zone.”

Meierhoff had 8 points after two free throws at the beginning of the third quarter; she eventually finished the game with 9 points. Gordon hit a 3 to bring the Warriors within 7, 24-17.

After Katey Ehrlich answered a Sedgwick 3-pointer with her own, the Cardinals scored 6 consecutive points to close the third quarter.

Sedgwick held off a 10-point quarter by the Warriors with a 12-point final frame to win by 15.

The Cardinals success was drawn from their post presence. Towering twins Sandra and Jami Douvier — both 6 feet tall — scored 8 and 11 points respectively. Sandra also grabbed 9 rebounds while Jami recorded 5 boards. Annabelle Little — 5-foot-11 — scored 6 points.

While she was forced to sit for most of the second quarter, Gordon was frustrated by the long, athletic Sedgwick post players. Gordon scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Ehrlich was Marion’s leading rebounder with 8.

Megan Richmond was the Warriors third highest scorer with 6 points.

However, the statistic that ensured Sedgwick victory was forcing 31 Marion turnovers; the Cardinals won the turnover margin by 11.

“In a 1-3-1, they have a lot of size running pressure against you in the half court,” Savage said.

Girls outplay Bulldogs

The Marion High School girls basketball team defeated Bennington, 34-25, Friday at Bennington.

Emily Hett and Katey Ehrlich were the high scorers for the Warriors with 8 points each. Sarah Guetersloh and Whitney Gordon both had 7 points. The Warriors shot over 30 percent from the field.

Although Gordon’s scoring production was down because she was recovering from illness, she still recorded 14 rebounds.

The Marion defense was especially suffocating on Friday. The Warriors forced over 20 turnovers. Ehrlich and Erin Meierhoff held the Bulldogs’ season-high scorer scoreless.

“They get a little better every game,” coach Randy Savage said of his team. “If we don’t run out of season, we’ll be pretty good.”
