Give that candidate a pat on the back

Five Marion residents who believe they can make a difference in our community have stepped forward — willing to serve on the Marion City Council with other elected officials who are trying to make a difference.

Serving in a public office is not easy. If elected, council members are sometimes criticized for making decisions and then criticized when no decisions are made.

It’s pretty much a thankless job.

However, when things go right, the rewards can be priceless.

Thank you, candidates, for your willingness.

It’s easy for us to complain, but it takes gumption and fortitude to step up and take responsibility for the city’s future.

On a similar note, City Councilman and mayoral candidate Steve Smith has been the topic of numerous conversations around town regarding his financial situation.

People are wondering if someone who files bankruptcy is capable of handling city affairs.

Regardless of anyone’s opinion, I was saddened to hear of Smith’s wife, Stacie’s, condition. (See Smith’s Letter to the Editor on this page.)

And regardless of the outcome of the election, instead of immediately assuming the Smiths did something irresponsible, we should come together as a community and support them.

Because that’s what this community does.
