This is the time of year when Marion County’s brightest are leaving the safe, comfortable surroundings of home to venture out into the real world.

With so much happening on the state and local levels regarding the funding of education — or the lack of funding — we are reminded that our youths are counting on us to provide them with the tools they need to succeed.

I recently read about a 16-year-old girl from Dallas who has come up with photodynamic therapy to fight cancer. I don’t know if she is a product of public education but the story made me wonder what will happen to our local students who have these types of abilities if some academic programs are cut because of funding.

What sacrifices should we be making right now to ensure our youths receive a proper education?

The burden also rests with our students. Are they taking advantage of all opportunities presented to them?

These are heavy questions in troubled times.

Here’s what I do know for sure. As our children, now adults, leave our communities, we have equipped them with values, ethics, and a sense of knowing satisfaction from a job well done. Marion County Kansas is considered the heart of the country for more than geographical reasons. We are the mainstay, a part of the country that doesn’t stray from valuing our children and their education.

High school seniors, take this knowledge and experience with you to college or to your jobs. You will experience many things as you venture out in the world, but don’t forget your roots. You are from Marion County — a community of hardworking, determined people who value family, faith, and following dreams.

Marion County has given you opportunities to shine in academics, sports, and arts — opportunities you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else, regardless of the size of the community.

Our teachers care about their students. Our administrators and board members take their tasks to heart, deliberating over difficult decisions.

Our communities support our seniors and want them to do well.

Just remember, seniors, the doors are always open. Whenever you want to come back, we will welcome you with open arms.

In the meantime, God speed and make your communities and families proud.
