Hett, McCarty set PRs, place

Sixteen Marion High School track and field athletes placed Thursday at the Conrad Nightengale Invitational.

Whitney Gordon won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches, her best jump this season. She placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.72 seconds, which was a personal record for Gordon. She was also part of the sixth-place 4x400 relay team with Sarah Eurit, Katie Ehrlich, and Alicia Maloney, 54.95.

Ehrlich placed fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.89, a personal record.

“We were really pleased with our hurdlers,” coach Grant Thierolf said.

Maloney finished fourth in the pole vault with a jump of 8-0.

Kaelyn Thierolf also placed in multiple events. She finished second in the 3200, 12:39.40, and fifth in the 1600, 5:46.10.

Placing in multiple events for the boys team was Patrick McCarty. McCarty finished second in the 400 with a time of 52.34, which was a personal best. The winner from Hesston of the race was only two one hundredths of a second faster than McCarty.

“Great 400 by Patrick,” Grant Thierolf said. “He will learn how to finish that race.”

McCarty also placed fifth in the triple jump, 40-5, and was part of the fifth-place 4x400 relay team with James Jones, Colten Johnson, and Dillon Richmond, 3:40.51.

Johnson placed third in the javelin with a throw of 159-10. Conner Thierolf finished fifth with a throw of 153-8.

Richmond finished third in the pole vault with a jump of 12-0. He finished one spot ahead of Zach Hammond, who set a new personal record with a jump of 11-6.

Jordan Hett also placed in multiple events. He finished second in the 3200 with a time of 10:15.75 and third in the 1600, 4:50.57.

“Jordan had a big PR in the 3200 and is starting to be thought of as one of the threats to medal in the 3200 at state,” Thierolf said.

The 4x800 relay team of Jacob Cope, Timothy Knolla, Clark Kroupa, and Michael Kirkpatrick finished sixth with a time of 9:38.53.

The Warrior boys team finished fifth with 45 team points. The Marion girls team finished seventh with 33 points.

Other Warriors to set personal records were Spencer Fugitt in the shot put with a throw of 35-10; Jordan Versch in the 100, 11.97, and 200, 25.12; Jacob Cope in the 3200, 11:19.06; and Knolla in the 1600, 5:26.34.

“It is hard to perform real well in two big meets during a three-day span, but for the most part we did pretty well,” Thierolf said of the Warriors who also competed at Smoky Valley April 18. “We need to work on finishing races, but we are getting into shape.”

The Warriors will compete starting at 10 a.m. Friday at Beloit Relays.
