Hope in the Heartland

The unseen reality

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

A proud grandfather — and military veteran — told his grandchildren of his wartime experiences.

He talked on about the battles he fought, and the close calls he encountered. Finally, one grandchild interrupted him, “But, Grandpa, what did the rest of the army do?”

As combatants in spiritual warfare, believers can learn from that bewildered child’s question. We are not alone on the battlefield. Christians have other Christians serving beside them.

But we also have another force that exists outside of our physical eyesight. Almighty God has innumerable armies of angels at His disposal. They possess powers to fight on our behalf if God gives the command.

Once, the prophet Elisha was trapped by enemies armed to destroy him. His panicked servant came asked, “What shall we do?” It certainly appeared, to the natural eye, that there was no hope. But Elisha told his servant not to be afraid. Then he prayed that God would open his servant’s eyes to see the spiritual reality surrounding them. “And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (II Kings 6:17).

Take heart, believer. The battle belongs to the Lord!
