Icy roads lead to 8 accidents

Icy roads, and particularly icy bridges, led to eight automobile accidents Dec. 23 involving 10 drivers in less than two hours.

Beginning at 6 p.m. and ending about 8 p.m., the rash of crashes sent only one driver to a hospital, according to accident reports. Jordan Vulgamore of Manhattan was southbound on U.S. 77 when he lost control near mile marker 100. He slid off the right side of the road and rolled his pickup. He was transported to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, with possible injuries.

Three crashes occurred within minutes at a bridge on U.S. 56, one-half mile west of Cedar Street, Marion.

Marion County Sheriff’s Department and Florence, Marion, and Peabody police departments investigated the accidents.

Seven of the 10 drivers involved in the accidents were from outside of Marion County. All of the accidents occurred on highways, U.S. 56, U.S. 77, or K-256.
