Injuries from rollover claim life of Marion man

Staff writer

Ike Boone, 45, of Marion, died Sunday, apparently from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle rollover accident Thursday on Nighthawk Road.

“He told me he was coming home from work at AGCO when he dropped his cigarette,” said his ex-wife Brenda Boone. “By the time he picked it up, he was already airborne and the vehicle rolled three times before coming to rest.”

Marion County Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident at the curved road six miles north of Peabody, but Boone refused treatment at the scene and was later transported to St. Luke Hospital in Marion by his girlfriend, Laura Hiebert.

“They evaluated him at St. Luke then sent him to Wesley,” Hiebert said. “We thought he was going to be OK, but we were obviously wrong.”

Boone left the Wichita hospital sometime on Friday, returning to his home in Marion.

Hiebert noted that he was alive early Sunday morning, but at 9 a.m., he became unresponsive. She called for help and a neighbor arrived, immediately beginning CPR. An ambulance was called, and Boone was taken to St. Luke Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 10:10 a.m.

“We’ve been told that basically he bled to death internally from lacerations to his spleen,” said DeAnna Williams, sister of Hiebert. “He may have had some other bruises and injuries, but the main problem was the damaged spleen.”

Family members held a special service for Boone on Tuesday at Marion Christian Church and plan a private burial at a later time.
