John L. Gonzalez, 85, of Hillsboro, died April 29 at Via Christi Hospital, Wichita.

He was born July 20, 1925, at Valley Center, to Eleodoro and Herlinda (Castillo) Gonzalez.

A Hillsboro resident since 2006, he had lived in Halstead and Newton.

He was a registered nurse and retired car salesman.

He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd class.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Halstead.

On June 19, 1947, he married Mary Cleo Martinez in Raton, N.M. She preceded him in death March 18, 2009.

A brother, Manuel, and sister Margaret Gonzalez, preceded him in death.

Survivors include four sons, Chester of Newton, Jon Jr. of Wichita, Robert of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Frank of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Rebecca Low of Wichita; two brothers, Roman of Walton and Fred of Newton; a sister, Jenny Sanchez of Derby; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A rosary was recited Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Halstead.

Mass of Christian burial was Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Steve Baxter officiating.

Burial followed at Halstead Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established with the American Diabetes Association in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, 418 Chestnut St, Halstead KS 67056.
