The Centre High School junior varsity football team defeated Wakefield Sept. 29, 54-12.

After Wakefield scored the opening touchdown, the Cougars scored two on a 22-yard pass from Tanner Brunner to Rustyn Kerbs and one-yard run by Brunner. Alex Hajek ran for four extra-points.

Centre scored eight more points in the second quarter on a 35-yard run and two-point conversion run by Hajek, to lead 24-6 at halftime.

Wakefield added six points in the third quarter, and Hajek returned the kickoff 68 yards for another Cougar touchdown.

With a minute remaining in the quarter, Hajek ran 21 yards for another touchdown. Cole Svoboda caught a pass from Brunner for the extra points, putting Centre out in front, 38-12.

Centre held Wakefield scoreless in the fourth quarter and added two more touchdowns on a 22-yard run by Hajek and a 35-yard pass from Brunner to Kerbs.

Casey Kristek caught a pass and Brunner ran for two successful conversions, resulting in a 42-point victory.

Despite a loss of 65 yards on penalties, the Cougars were powerful on the ground, rushing for 240 yards in 31 carries compared to 149 yards in 41 carries by Wakefield.

Hajek led the charge for the Cougars, carrying the ball 13 times for 126 yards.

Brunner threw six successful receptions for 138 yards compared to a total of 68 yards in the air by Wakefield.

Brian Burhoop was leading receiver with three catches for 92 yards. Kerbs had three receptions for 46 yards.

Kerbs led the defense with seven unassisted and seven assisted tackles. Other leading tacklers (unassisted/assisted) were: Kordell Harding, five/eight; Quentin Wacker, six/four; and Shane Methvin, four/five.
