On Oct. 6, the Centre junior varsity football team ran over the White City Huskies 50-0, to end its season with four wins and one loss. The only loss was against Hope.

Playing on the road, the Cougars piled up seven touchdowns and a safety, the final touchdown scored with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, bringing the game to a screeching halt.

Quarterback Tanner Brunner threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter, the first one a 15-yarder to Houston Svoboda, the second, a 41-yarder to Alex Hajek. Brian Burhoop added a two-point conversion.

Centre continued to gain momentum in the second quarter as Hajek ran 44 yards and Svoboda caught 40-yard and 20-yard passes for a total of three touchdowns. Kordell Harding scored two extra points, and Centre led 34-0.

The Cougars weren’t done yet. Centre recovered a Huskie fumble that resulted in a safety, and Hajek followed up less than a minute later with a 49-yard kick return for a touchdown. Nathan Barney ran for the extra point, and Centre led 44-0.

Brunner scored the final touchdown with a four-yard run in the third quarter to end the game. It was an easy 50-point shutout.

The Cougars compiled 143 yards on the ground compared to 23 by the Huskies. Hajek was the leading rusher, with six carries for 72 yards.

Brunner passed for 116 yards and Svoboda had three receptions for 75 yards.

Defensively, seven players had four solo tackles. They were Benjamin Wirtz, Hajek, Wacker, Rustyn Kerbs, Harding, Brunner, and Ben S. Wacker also had five assists to lead the defense overall.

The good season bodes well for the future of varsity football at Centre High School.
