A full-length documentary, “The Miracle of Father Kapaun,” will be shown at 1 p.m. Sunday in the basement of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen.

The full-length documentary features some of the soldiers the Pilsen priest saved during the Korean War and a young athlete from Sedgwick County who believes his life was saved through the intercession of Father Kapaun.

The public is invited to attend. DVDs of the documentary will be available for a $20 donation.

The documentary is being shown at various locations within the Wichita Diocese, including 7 p.m. Sunday at Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita.

KPTS plans numerous airings of the documentary — 7 p.m. Tuesday, 9 p.m. Dec. 27, 7 p.m. Jan. 28, 8 p.m. Jan. 30, and 10 p.m. Jan. 31.

KPTS Explore, the station’s digital channel, will air the documentary at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 and 7 p.m. Jan. 25.

The Wichita Eagle completed a weeklong, eight-part series on Father Kapaun Sunday.

Written by Roy Wenzl, it provides firsthand accounts of the life and deeds of Father Kapaun in a prisoner-of-war camp in North Korea, where he died in May 1951.

The camp reportedly had more survivors than other camps, presumably because of the constant assistance and encouragement the POWs received from Father Kapaun.

Kapaun has been nominated for the Medal of Honor and could become just the third American-born Roman Catholic saint.
