Kassebaum leads Centre girls at league

Girls’ team places third

Centre High School senior Theo Kassebaum earned 22 points for the girls’ track team in the Wheat State League track meet Thursday at Goessel, leading them to a third-place finish overall.

She finished first in the 100-meter hurdles, improving from a time of 17.3 seconds in the preliminaries to 16.5 in the finals. She had third-place finishes in the 300 low hurdles and long jump.

Sophomore Cacey Simons tied for second place in high jump for 7 points. She finished third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 for another 10 points.

Freshman Shelby Makovec placed second in the 1600 and 3200, earning an additional 16 points for the team.

Freshman Brenna Shields added 14 points by finishing second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 400.

Freshman Nellie Kassebaum finished third in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200 for 8 points.

Little River won the track meet, and Wakefield finished in second place.

Those who placed on the boys’ team were junior Houston Svoboda, third in the 100 and fourth in the 200, sophomore Ty Simons, sixth in the 300 intermediate hurdles, and the 4x100 relay team of Grant Srajer, Justin Deines, Conner Montgomery, and Svoboda, fourth place.

Hope boys won, followed by Little River and White City. Centre finished eighth.

The regional track meet is Friday at Burlington.

Herington

The girls’ team finished in second place May 4 at Herington in the Steve Herrmann Invitational.

Northern Heights won the meet, followed by Centre, Herington, Hope, Goessel, Peabody-Burns, Osage City, and White City.

Theo Kassebaum, Makovec, and the girls 4x100 relay team led the way for Centre. Kassebaum, competing in the 100-meter high hurdles, Makovec in the 3,200 run, and the girls 4x100 relay team had first-place finishes. Kassebaum finished second in long jump, and Makovec finished second in the 1,600.

On the boys’ team, Svoboda took first place in the 100 and 200. A 4x100 relay team also placed first. The boys finished in seventh place.
