Marion Kiwanis Club will have its 90th anniversary banquet on April 18. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Marion Community Center. The doors will open at 6 p.m.
At the Tuesday meeting with 23 people present, Jeremiah Lange gave a presentation about Café Justo, a “fair trade-plus” coffee cooperative in Mexico. Fair trade-plus means that it pays growers a price they can live on and gives the growers the control over the process.
Café Justo got started in 2002 with help from Fronteras de Cristo, a mission which helps people get decent jobs in Mexico so they aren’t tempted to cross the border between Arizona and Mexico.
Lange said that Marion Presbyterian Church began placing orders for Café Justo coffee in November. Whenever they get enough orders, they place an order for a single shipment. So far, there have been four shipments to Marion.
Lange said he sees Café Justo as both a good cause and a good business model.
