Kiwanis to donate to food bank

Marion Kiwanis Club discussed the Old Settlers’ Day theme and Easter egg hunt Tuesday with 18 members and one guest present. The club will raise money next week for Marion County Emergency Food Bank.

Greg Bowers led club members in singing several songs. Al Ash reported that several members had attended a pancake breakfast Saturday in McPherson for interclub credit. Another interclub meeting will be Saturday at Emporia. Members will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to go.

Gayla Ratzlaff, director of the county department on aging, spoke about her department’s programs. Her office mostly provides information and referrals for senior citizens, rather than providing direct services.

Ratzlaff said one of her primary goals is helping senior citizens continue to live in their homes.

The department coordinates with senior centers in the county, organizes volunteers to give seniors rides to doctor appointments and other errands, and consults people who are getting ready to retire.

Ratzlaff teaches tai chi for people with arthritis and balance issues. The department will have fall-prevention classes in April.
