When Warren Slocombe of Peabody glanced at the Jumbo-Tron from his seat in Snyder Family Stadium on the Kansas State University campus several weeks ago, he thought to himself that the guy on the screen looked just like former Peabody Gazette-Bulletin editor Bill Krause.

The longer he looked the more convinced he was that the man was indeed Krause.

He was right!

Krause and his brother, Gayle Krause of El Dorado, were there in the end zone between quarters of the Kansas State University football game against Missouri. Both men graduated from KSU and were part of a group of alumni being honored for their service to the country during World War II at home games at the KSU stadium.

The brothers also were recipients of a trip to the World War II monument in Washington D.C. the first week in October. Gayle Krause’s son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Laurin Krause, had made all the arrangements through the Honor Flight Network, which provides trips at no charge for veterans.

Matthew and Laurin accompanied the brothers and served as trip guardians. Each veteran on an Honor Flight has to have a guardian. The Honor Flight Network pays for all of the veterans’ expenses, but guardians must pay their own way.

Matthew Krause compiled a short video of the trip and it was played on the Jumbo-Tron screen as the men were honored.

The only likely damper on the day was the Wildcat loss to Missouri. Otherwise, it appears it was darn near perfect.
