Lady Cougars defeat Herington, finish fourth

The Centre Lady Cougars defeated Herington, 57-54, Friday in the second game of pool play in the Herington pre-season basketball tournament.

Freshman Shelby Makovec got the Lady Cougars off to a quick start with a three-point shot. Beka Basore, Theo Kassebaum, Cacey Simons, and Makenzie Deines each added points to give Centre a 13-8 first-quarter lead.

However, Herington came back to overwhelm the Lady Cougars 24-12 in the second quarter and take a 32-25 halftime lead.

Centre battled back in the third quarter. A basket by Amy Makovec put Centre back on top, 37-36. Centre led, 41-40, at the end of the quarter.

Shelby Makovec was unstoppable in the fourth quarter, piling up 12 of Centre’s 16 points Herington scored 14 points, giving Centre a three-point victory.

Makovec scored 17 points altogether. Basore scored 14 points, Simons nine, Amy Makovec six, Kassebaum four, Genesis Rudolph three, and Jasmin Abdel Ghany and Deines two each.

Northern Heights

Northern Heights overwhelmed Centre Thursday, defeating the Lady Cougars, 52-23.

The girls struggled to score throughout the game. They trailed 17-6 at the end of the first quarter, and Heights built its lead from there.

Simons scored the most points with six, followed by Rudolph by five.

Southeast of Saline

After their win Friday against Herington, the Lady Cougars faced Southeast of Saline Saturday in a contest for third place. It was the second time they played the Lady Trojans this year. Southeast won the game, 57-36.

Simons scored 15 points including two 3-point shots. Makovec scored nine points including one 3-point shot. Basore had five points, Kassebaum three, and Rudolph, Brenna Shields, and Deines two each.

Hope defeated Northern Heights for first place in the tournament.
