Lady Cougars play out of their league

Facing 2A Berean and 3A Eureka and Lyons, the young 1A Centre High School volleyball team had a rough day Saturday at the Marion Spikefest. They lost all three matches in pool play.

Centre did have one victory in the match with Berean, winning the second game, 25-18. After a 3-3 tie, the Lady Cougars took the lead and maintained it throughout the game, although Berean got within 1 point several times.

The other two games with Berean ended in losses of 25-11 and 25-10.

The Lady Cougars were defeated by Lyons, 25-18 and 25-12, and by Eureka, 25-12 and 25-16.

Sedgwick defeated Berean and Eureka defeated Halstead in the semifinals. Sedgwick won the championship game, and Halstead took third place. Marion and Canton Galva also were in the tournament but did not advance.

Parents’ Night

At Parents’ Night Sept. 13, the Lady Cougars thrilled fans by sweeping their final home triangular. They handily defeated Solomon and Hope to improve their record to 7-4.

Centre defeated Solomon in two games, 25-8 and 25-11. Simons served for 8 points in the first game and 2 points in the second, including five aces. She also contributed six spikes, three kills, and two blocks.

Setters Rudolph and Makovec combined for 24-of-25 completions, 11 resulting in kills. Svoboda led at the net with eight spikes and four kills.

Defeating Hope, 25-17 and 25-11, the Lady Cougars sailed to another decisive victory. Weber was leading server with 10 points, followed by Svoboda with eight.

Rudolph and Makovec were perfect in setting, and the front line was almost perfect in spiking, completing 33-of-35 attempts. Weber delivered six kills and one block.

The junior varsity defeated Hope, 25-11 and 25-7. Shields served for 23 points.

The team split games with Solomon, winning the first one in a tight matchup, 26-24, and losing in a shortened second game, 22-15. Shields again was leading server with 14 points.
