The Centre High School girls basketball team defeated Wakefield, 39-28, in their final home game of the season.
It was parents’ night. Senior girls who were recognized with their parents were Josie Peterson, Carlye Simons, Shelby Deines, and Samantha Seifert.
Carlye Simons made two field goals and three free throws, Deines sank a 3-pointer, and Ripley Howard and DJ Turner each made a basket to give Centre a 14-7 lead after one quarter.
After a disastrous 2-point second quarter, the Lady Cougars hung onto a 1-point lead at halftime.
They picked up their play in the third and fourth quarters, leading scoring 12-4 and 11-9, to win by 11 points.
Simons led scoring with 16 points, including 10-of-17 from the free-throw line. Deines scored 9 points, Allison Shields 8, Howard 4, and Turner 2.
The junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 15-13. After trailing 7-4 at the end of three quarters, they scored 11 points in the final quarter, compared with 6 points by Wakefield, to win by 2 points.
Scorers were Genesis Rudolph, 8; Anna Weber, 3; and Katie Remy and Carrie Carlson, 2 each.
Chase County
In a nonleague game Friday at 2A Chase County, the Lady Cougars were defeated, 52-37. They ended the regular season with a record of 8-12.
Two bad quarters put the game out of reach. Centre was outscored in every quarter: 14-8, 12-11, 12-6, and 14-12.
Despite the loss, Deines had a good night, scoring 15 points including two 3-pointers, one field goal, and 7-of-9 free throws. After scoring 7 points in the first quarter, Simons was scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Other scorers were Ripley Howard, 9, and Allison Shields, 6.
The junior varsity was defeated, 65-39. Ellie Miller led scoring for Centre with 13 points. Other scorers were Amanda Floyd and Theo Kassebaum, 6 each; Weber, 5; Rudolph and Beka Basore, 3 each; Remy, 2; and Carlson, 1.
