In a home game Jan. 3, the Centre High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Peabody-Burns, 41-27. They were defeated Friday at White City, 48-36.
Good scoring in the second half could not overcome poor scoring in the first half. White City took an 11-6 lead in the first quarter and kept Centre scoreless in the second quarter to lead by 15 points at halftime.
The second half was a different story. The Lady Cougars and Lady Huskies both scored 16 points in the third quarter, and the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Huskies, 14-11, in the final quarter.
Cacey Simons led scoring with 10 points, 8 of them in the second half. Shelby Makovec scored 7 points including a 3-point basket. Jasmin Ghany and Beka Basore scored 6 points each.
The junior varsity was defeated, 21-14. They trailed by 1 point, 7-6, at halftime but were outscored 14-8 in the second half. Scorers were Kailyn Riffel and Makenzie Deines, 4 each; and Ghany, Brenna Shields, and Cassidy Hill, 2 each.
Against Peabody-Burns, Brianna Svoboda and Shelby Makovec each made a 3-point shot in the second quarter, and free throws by Makovec, Ghany, and Simons contributed to a 19-12 lead at halftime.
Amy Makovec, Rudolph, and Simons added field goals in the third quarter and Shelby Makovec made two free throws. Centre held Peabody-Burns to 4 points in the quarter and finished with a 29-18 lead.
The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Warriors 12-9 in the fourth quarter to finish with a 14-point victory.
Simons led scoring with 15 points, followed by Shelby Makovec with 10. Other scoring totals were Rudolph, 4; Svoboda and Amy Makovec, 3 each; and Ghany, Theo Kassebaum, and Deines, 2 each.
The junior varsity girls were defeated, 30-21, in three quarters of play. Ghany scored 12 points, followed by Kailyn Riffel, 3, and Brenna Shields, Callie Riffel, and Cassidy Hill, 2 each.
