Lady Warriors split opener

Staff writer

After a shaky start, the Marion softball team came together in the second game of its doubleheader against Herington, holding on for a win.

The Warriors struggled offensively in the first game, while the Railers loaded the bases in the first inning. Pitcher Megan Richmond battled with batters through the count, but a double scored two runs for Herington.

Richmond struck out the next batter, but a ground ball out brought home the third score of the inning.

Herington again would score three runs in the third inning, in part due to defensive errors by Marion. Neither team would score the rest of the way, the Railers winning 6-0.

Marion flipped the script on the Railers in the second game though, scoring four runs in the first two innings.

Behind the pitching of Shelby Felvus, Marion led 7-0 at the bottom of the fourth inning. The lead did not last long though, as Herington came back, only trailing Marion 9-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After a Marion error on a pop-fly, the Railers hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 9.

At the top of the seventh inning, Richmond hit a triple and was batted in by Kayla Kroupa. Pitcher Megan Davies then held the Railers scoreless in the bottom of the inning to preserve the 10-9 win.
