Events keep lakes busy

Improvements made in offseason

Staff writer

Staff at lakes in Marion County were busy in the offseason making facility improvements in preparation for upcoming events.

Marion County Park and Lake

During the winter and spring, Marion County Park and Lake made several improvements.

A new restroom facility was installed near the heated dock, many trees were planted around the lake, and speed bumps were installed in areas with heavy foot traffic, said Marion County Park and Lake Superintendent Steve Hudson. A tent campsite was added on the south side of the lake.

Upcoming events include a bluegrass concert June 20, chili cook-off Oct. 3, and Midwest Polka Club meeting Oct. 17.

Marion Reservoir

There are no signs of serious blue-green algae infestations yet at Marion Reservoir.

Improvements at the reservoir include new playground equipment at the French Creek Cove campsite and replacement of spillway bathroom facilities, said Park Ranger Neal Whitaker.

The lake level was lowered a couple of feet during the winter, which prevented the need to spill excess water from spring rains during walleye spawning season. The effects should be seen in two or three years when those walleye are grown, Whitaker said.

Kansas Walleye Association will have a fishing tournament June 7 at the reservoir.
