Former financial manager Laurence Edwin Bartel, 83, died Saturday at home in Newton.

He was born July 19, 1931, to Edwin and Sarah Bartel in Drake, Saskatchewan.

He married Betty Schmidt on November 7, 1953, and they lived briefly near Drake before moving to Hesston. He was business manager at Prairie View Mental Health Center and a financial investor with Valic.

His parents, two brothers, and three sisters preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, Bev Regier Annette Bartel, Larry Bartel, and Randy Bartel; two sisters; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Mennonite Church, Newton. A light luncheon, sharing time, and hymn sing following the service.
