Legion to honor veterans

Area military personnel who have completed tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa will be honored Feb. 18 with a homecoming celebration at the VFW post in Marion.

American Legion Post 22 and VFW Post 6958 are collaborating to provide an opportunity for the community to show its appreciation .

“We’re asking the whole community to join in on this,” American Legion post adjutant Gary Chaput said. “We’re welcoming home five of our troops who have served in Iraq and Aghanistan, and possibly six or seven.”

Confirmed honorees attending the event are James Schlehuber, Matt Williams, Tracy Winter, Shad Winter, and Tyler Mermis.

American Legion motorcycle riders will kick off the event at 2:45 p.m. with a flag tribute ride from Eastmoor United Methodist Church to the VFW post.

Local and state public officials, as well as American Legion and VFW regional and state officers, have been invited to the ceremony and reception, which will start at 3 p.m.

VFW Post 6958 is located 420 West Santa Fe Street in Marion.
