CORRESPONDENTS:   Living Center

St. Luke Living Center correspondent

Residents were invited to Mass with Fr. Hien in the chapel Friday morning. Our group was joined by Pat Smith, Marie Navrat, Ida Svitak, Jeanne Vinduska, Martin Hajek, and Phyllis and Richard Hein.

Due to a large contingent of living center bakers being in the chapel, mixers, stirrers, and beaters were in short supply that morning. But Frances stepped “up to the plate” and got things started. Just in the knick of time, other bakers arrived to help drop, frost, and sprinkle nuts on Mom’s buttermilk cookies. We made the “cookie pillows” for a bake sale fund-raiser, the proceeds going toward medical expenses for our housekeeping friend Judy Hein’s grandson, Kyle Pierce.

Sometime mid-day Friday, a large, painted, well-groomed and decorated pumpkin arrived. The “pumpkin elves” must make their rounds in broad daylight.

Lois Winter, using her rain check, called bingo for our players in the afternoon. She and our man Friday, Bill Schimpf, are very efficient and helpful, making the popular games roll right along.

Gene Vinduska was back Saturday morning after what seemed to be a long absence, to entertain us with his accordion music.

Our Sunday afternoon guest was Pastor Larry King of God News Christian Fellowship.

A large bunch of residents and staff gathered in the courtyard Monday afternoon with all the watermelon we could eat, thanks to Jirak Produce and Terry Vinduska. It was so comfortable out there, we exercised there, also. These beautiful warm days will be gone before we know it.

We began “coloring fall” Tuesday morning, perhaps playing a little one-upmanship with Mother Nature. Since this is an ongoing project, she could possibly overtake us.

That afternoon we spent a July day with 11-year-old Sterling, his father, and the young raccoon, Rascal, as they shared a rare adventure together. They purposely stayed until twilight to hear the magnificent call of the whippoorwills in the lush, remote area of Wisconsin.

Prayer group was held as scheduled Wednesday morning with help from Lydia and Nancy.

Anita Brookens came to our aid Thursday morning, serving as hymn sing pianist and leader.

We were happy Almeda Kahns came Thursday after lunch, bringing sacks of homemade afghans and a queen-sized 2,025-square pieced quilt-top she currently is working on. Our van driver was on vacation and we couldn’t take an outing, so Almeda took an outing to visit with us. Several residents brought items they had made, or had been made by a loved one to “show and tell” also.
