Living Center backers caught fall fever Friday morning and mixed up a pan full of glazed apple bars, a recipe from Donna Roberts of Shumway, Ill. They were truly delicious, thanks in no small part to the pecans we added. Our housekeeper, Mary Raleigh gifted us with a two-pound bag of nuts and we wasted little time putting a cup of them to work.

The afternoon’s bingo caller was Pat Smith who also may have been suffering from the fever. She brought an iced German apple cake and shared it with the bingo players and our steadfast friend Bill Schimpf.

We are very grateful to another friend, Al Ash, who drove our large white van and 10 passengers downtown Saturday morning to watch the Old Settlers’ Day parade. Thank you also to the city and police department for reserving us a nice parking space.

Rev. Josh Wesner of Emmanuel Baptist Church was our Sunday afternoon guest minister and Lydia Batt accompanied the hymn singing.

We spent time Monday morning “getting pretty” for the afternoon’s celebration of our September birthdays, six of them in fact. May built and served root beer floats in our main dining room to this month’s honored guests, Don Viets, Gladys Queen, Berniece Broadstreet, Lu Fredrickson, Frances Kattwitz, and Jan Smith, as well as all other residents.

The members attended the monthly resident council meeting Tuesday morning and we covered many topics. We thought it would be fun for staff and residents to “dress-up” for Halloween. It was suggested we have Saturday afternoon matinees complete with popcorn, soft drinks, and a “now showing” marquee.

Debbie shared some innovative ideas on LC living. We also reviewed the first portion of the resident’s Bill of Rights.

During book club in the afternoon, Sterling innocently introduced young Rascal to sweet corn. What began happening nightly in surrounding gardens brought angry gardeners to the north home. To quiet the situation, father, son, and raccoon took a two-week camping trip to northern Wisconsin.

The Marion County Record had many articles of interest to our current events group.

Hymn singers received a double blessing Thursday morning when not only Lois Winter was here and played songs but Shirley Bowers also was here. Both women have beautiful voices and the result was lovely to hear.

The gorgeous weather that afternoon prompted the outing-takers to drive around beautiful Marion County Lake not only once, but twice (with different passengers each time). The water fowl on the lake was a wonderful scene and the abundant flowers and foliage adorning lake residents yards was another super show. There were ice cream sandwiches for every one at the trip’s end.
