Friday morning, hoping to please the discriminating palates of all our backers, we made peanut butter pecan cookies — one batch with and one batch without chocolate chips.

Our volunteers, who made bingo playing possible this week, were Elsie Reiswig and Bill Schimpf.

The inaugural “free” Saturday classic movie matinee was “Heidi,” starring Shirley Temple as the spirited young heroine. Popcorn and drinks were included in the “price of the ticket.”

Sunday afternoon’s guest minister and guitarist were Rev. Carl Helm and his son-in-law Chris Ensley, representing Marion Christian Church.

History was revisited Monday afternoon as we commemorated the 1492 landing of Christopher Columbus, “one” of the discoverers of America.

We used a bit of mental muscles Tuesday morning while playing 20 questions but were stumped by Pearl who was Christopher Columbus and Amelia who was a bonfire.

The reputation of the living center was saved by Elissa and Amanda when they entered a black eye lashed pumpkin beauty for our department in the facility-wide carving/decorating contest. A “voting” donation to the Susan B. Kohlman for the Cure breast cancer research foundation will determine the winner.

Thursday we spent the rainy afternoon in our kitchen/dining room creating toast ghosts, looking ghastly with cream cheese swirl and bits of raisins. Meanwhile, we shared ghost stories, a personal one and another from a family in Martinsburg, W. Va. By afternoon’s end the large plate of creatures had been eaten, a scary thought.

Speaking of this week’s cool, raining weather, it certainly has our outdoor—loving residents exhibiting cabin fever symptoms.

Shirley Bowers and a very full chapel of residents sang hymns Thursday morning, some with a patriotic flavor.

Around the noon—hour, four members of the Marion High School chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) brought button adorned orange “BOO” decorations for each resident’s room door.

Following lunch, eight residents, a guest and two staff members embarked on the weekly bus outing. The trip took us through Antelope, past the Kroupa farms, through Pilsen; and on to our destination, Jirak Produce, home of thousands of pumpkins. Margaret and her son, Ron, gave each of us a beautiful gourd and we purchased two large pumpkins to “season” the front entrance of our home. Topping the great trip was the magnificent fall weather.
