Lucinda Reed

Lucinda Anne Reed passed away April 19, 2010, following a courageous battle with prolonged illnesses associated with spinal stenosis.

Born in Wichita Sept. 28, 1942, Lucinda was the daughter of Marion Elizabeth Streeter and Harold Mansfield Hauser of Marion. Having spent her childhood in Marion, Lucinda attended Lindenwood College and the University of Kansas. She majored in English and Fine Arts and was named “Actress of the Year” at the university.

Subsequently, she studied at Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio in New York City. Lucinda received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Washburn University in 1964 and began her teaching career in elementary education in the Topeka Public School system.

On Aug. 8, 1964, she married Duane Jay Reed. In 1965, they moved to Lincoln, Neb., and she continued her teaching career in the Federal Head Start Program. Upon moving to Woodland Park, Colo., in 1970, she began what was to become a distinguished career as a teacher and forensics and drama coach in Woodland Park School District RE2.

Because of her dedication to the study of Fine Arts, Lucinda initiated the development of forensics and drama programs in the school system. She was actively engaged in both programs throughout her 28-year teaching career.

Throughout her lifetime, Lucinda was blessed with the joys of giving to her family, to her friends, and to generations of students that she acquainted with the wonder, excitement, and adventure that accompanies participation in the performing arts.

Lucinda is survived by her husband, Duane; their two daughters Jeremy Anne Reed of Colorado Springs and Rachel Elizabeth Thorpe of Tucson, Ariz.; a grandson, Brady Paul Thorpe; and her brother, Marc Mansfield Hauser of Overland Park.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to the Lucinda Anne Reed Memorial Forensics Scholarship Fund, Woodland Park High School, in care of Brian Gustafson, Director of Activities, PO Box 820, Woodland Park CO 80866.
