Marion approves water deal for county lake

Managing editor

Marion City Council has approved a water contract between the city and Marion County Improvement District No. 2, which provides water to Marion County Lake residents.

Length of the contract is 40 years with annual reviews. Terms increase the amount of water the improvement district can use and increase in rates to match rates charged to city customers.

In other business:

  • The council discussed at length whether lights should be used at the city’s water tower on Eisenhower Drive. Concerns were expressed about the monthly charges, which are $50 to $200, depending on the time of year. The city is not required to have lights on the tower.
  • City workers have been conducting annual maintenance with the water distribution system by overflowing the water tower. Since the end of a water line is in that area, residents sometimes experience discolored water. By flushing the system, it should remedy the problem. There also may be a chlorine odor in drinking water during the next few weeks.
  • A dividend check of $10,634 was received by the city from EMC Insurance Companies through local agent, Alex “Casey” Case.
  • Each full-time city employee will receive a Chingawassa Days button.
  • The council, City Administrator David Mayfield, and City Attorney Dan Baldwin entered into a 10-minute closed session to discuss personnel. There were no decisions when the council returned to open session.

The next council meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. June 15 in the city building.
