Marion board mulls budget for two hours

Staff writer

The USD 408 Board of Education deliberated over budgetary issues in a two-hour executive session, but held off all decisions until further meetings.

The board also listened to presentations by teachers from Marion Elementary School and Marion Middle School saluting students for meeting and, in many cases, exceeding state assessment standards, while introducing plans to keep students advancing in mathematics and reading.

Before both Marion schools held their presentations, Lori Soo Hoo from Parents As Teachers also showed a slide show presentation to the board.

Because Marion High School will be switching to a seven-hour schedule, MHS Principal Brenda Odgers presented the board with different options for a 26-credit graduation requirement. The board will make changes to Marion High School graduation requirements in a special meeting 8 a.m. Saturday.

The board approved an early release for students on Feb. 19 because of regional wrestling and a part-time contract for Katie Rahe for a forensics class every other Saturday.

The board also accepted a resignation from Marion Middle School science teacher Ann Leppke and retirement resignations from Marion High School English teacher Mary Griffith and kindergarten through eighth-grade art teacher Jan Davis.
