June has arrived — and it’s a good month to be in Marion County.

Everything gets started this weekend with Chingawassa Days in Central Park, Marion. Where else can you get a concert with legendary rock band 38 Special, a barbecue meal, ice cream, watermelon, children’s games, a poker tournament, and entertainment for a $35 button ($25 if you purchased a button before Tuesday)?

Marion County Lake is offering Local Appreciation Weekend when county residents are eligible for free tent camping or reduced-price RV camping permits. This coincides with Kansas free fishing weekend, when residents will be allowed to fish without a license.

An antique fair and car show will be June 12 in Hillsboro. Days of Olde Antique Fair will be during the day in downtown Hillsboro. The Route 56 Classic Cruisers Car Show will be at Memorial Park also that day.

Small quilts and vintage cars will be showcased at Mennonite Heritage & Agricultural Museum, 200 N. Poplar St., Goessel. Quilts will be on display June 11 through 13. An antique and classic car show will be June 13.

Marion County Relay for Life is June 18 and 19 at Joel H. Wiens Stadium, Tabor College campus, Hillsboro. This fundraiser brings county residents and out-of-town guests to an overnight walkathon.

And what about the bluegrass festival June 19 at Marion County Lake? Amateur musicians have an opportunity to perform during an open mike time followed by family entertainment. Bluegrass bands Jammin’ Biscuits, Folk Holler, Timber Creek Band, and Stranger Creek String Band will perform.

Yes, there are many events from which to choose, whether you want to volunteer, participate, or attend — and that’s just in June.

It is also an opportunity for the county to put its best foot forward.
