Main St. to close only briefly

Resurfacing work on Main Street in Marion shouldn’t close any portion of the road for more than a few hours this summer, engineer Darin Neufeld of EBH & Associates said Thursday.

The city has contracted with Kansas Paving of Wichita to resurface the street from Locust Street to just west of 1st Street for $222,709. The company will grind off the top two inches of asphalt and overlay the surface with the same amount of new asphalt.

People can drive on the surface between milling and overlay, Neufeld said. The street will be closed only while the new asphalt cools, which should take less than four hours.

Neufeld said it shouldn’t be anything more than an inconvenience of people having to park on a side street.

Kansas Paving has until Labor Day to complete the project, but Neufeld doesn’t know when it will begin. From start to finish, the project should take two weeks or less, he said.
