Police investigate repeated sexual battery

Staff writer

Marion Police are investigating accusations of repeated sexual battery committed in Marion, rural Marion County, and in several locations in the area.

The victim is a 38-year-old Marion woman who suffers from a mental disorder. She was sexually abused over the past 12 years as often as multiple times every month by the same assailant, Marion Police Chief Tyler Mermis said.

The victim and victims’ parents were previously afraid to report the crime because of proposed danger from the accused assailant. The parents reported the crimes June 14.

Marion Police are tracking the whereabouts of a suspect. They are working with Marion County Sheriff’s officers on the case. Mermis has also met with Marion County Attorney Susan Robson multiple times to discuss a variety of related potential charges.
