Marion Senior Center correspondent

Marion Senior Center shared a bit of Kansas trivia on Jan. 27 celebrating pride of statehood.Proud Kansans from Tampa, Hillsboro, Peabody, and Marion celebrated Kansas Day on Jan. 29 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church. They enjoyed a pioneer meal of beef stew, homemade bread, and fruit pie, served by Eastmoor United Methodist Women.

Following lunch, Marion County Department on Aging Coordinator Gayla Ratzlaff of Hillsboro introduced the Kansas Day performer. Ann Birney of Ride into History, portrayed Julia Archibald Holmes, who walked the Santa Fe Trail. She was the first woman to reach the top of Pike’s Peak.

The celebration ended with Sue Clough leading everyone in singing “Home on the Range.”

The center welcomed many of the county board members on Jan. 30. It was a surprise celebration for Lanell Hett and her years as the secretary in the county department on aging. She now works mornings only.

Evelyn Jewett announced the winner of the Dresden plate quilt. It was won by Keith and Norine Holtsclaw who placed the highest bid.

Noreen Porter of Good Shepherd Hospice gave a presentation Feb. 1. She distributed a handout on the hospice circle of care.

Residents are welcome at the center Feb. 15 for senior center day. The program will be given by Janet Hett Plank and family.
