Marion teen dies in crash

Kaleb Montgomery, 18, of Marion, died Saturday after he was ejected from his vehicle during a collision 14 miles west of Strong City.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Montgomery was traveling east on K-150 at 10:55 a.m. when he attempted to pass a semitrailer. A westbound semi, driven by Charles Foreman, 53, of Garden City, was in the oncoming lane.

Montgomery swerved to the south, then overcorrected and traveled toward the north ditch. Montgomery’s car was then struck on the passenger’s side by the oncoming semi.

Montgomery was ejected from his car. His vehicle came to rest in the south ditch. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Foreman’s semi left the roadway, overturned, and slid to rest on its driver’s side. Foreman was transported with injuries to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Debris from the collision struck a car driven by Armando Castillo, 25, of Hillsboro. Police said he and a passenger, Jame Castillo, 53, of Hillsboro, were not injured.

Montgomery had passed Castillo’s car before attempting to pass the semi, KHP said.

The Castillos were wearing seatbelts. It was not known whether Foreman was wearing a seat belt.

Montgomery spent much of his youth in Marion before moving to Cottonwood Falls with his mother, Jenny Herzet and his siblings. He graduated from Chase County High School in 2014.

Last fall, Montgomery moved back to Marion to live with his grandparents, Jim and Janet Herzet.
