Marion to host regional baseball

Marion High School will host a regional high school baseball tournament May 16 and 18.

Beloit, Bennington, Southeast of Saline, Hillsboro, Minneapolis, and Ellsworth high schools will compete with Marion High School for a state championship birth.

“Hillsboro will bring a pretty good crowd,” MHS activities director Tod Gordon said. “If they’re seeded first, Beloit should travel. We should have a pretty good turnout.”

Three first-round games will begin at 2 p.m. May 16. The first overall team in the bracket earns a bye in the first round. The semi-final and championship games will be played May 18.

“That’s the best format,” Gordon said. “One year we did it where the first round games would travel. Marion never got a chance to play on their home field.”

As of April 22 this season, Marion and Beloit were tied for the best record of the teams in the region. However, Gordon also said that Bennington may have the worst record of any team, and the Bulldogs defeated Marion on April 19.

“Anybody is capable of winning this thing,” Gordon said.

Gordon will release the seeding for the tournament May 11 after every teams’ final games Tuesday. The Warriors play Hoisington Tuesday; Hillsboro plays Smoky Valley in its final games.
