Staff writer

The Marion High School wrestling team placed third at the Chase County Invitational Saturday with 25 points, defeated by El Dorado and Mulvane who tied for first at 34 points.

Twelve teams participated in the invitational. Each player had the opportunity to pin their opponents in five different matches during the competition. Marion head coach Chad Adkins said the team did better than they have all season long.

Eric Regnier placed third with a 2-1 record at 126 pounds. Adkins said he wrestled much better this weekend than he had been wrestling recently. He also received the loudest cheers from the Marion cheerleading team.

Luke Steele placed third at 145 pounds with a 3-1 record. Adkins said he is starting to put things together at the right time.

Brody Carroll placed first this weekend at 152 pounds with a 3-0 record. Adkins said he is wrestling tough right now.

Zac Lewman placed second this weekend at 170 pounds with a 3-1 record. Adkins said he wrestled better than he has all year.

Adam Janzen placed second this weekend at 182 pounds with a 2-1 record.

Evan Slater placed first this weekend at 220 pounds with a 4-0 record. Adkins said Slater wrestled really well.

Adam Kjellin placed fourth this weekend at 285 pounds with a 2-2 record. Adkins said Kjellin had his best tournament of the year.

“We wrestled quite a bit better this weekend,” Adkins said. “We have regionals this weekend so we will spend the week tuning up and give it a go!”

The regional competition will take place Friday and Saturday. Then, if successful, Marion will go to the state competition Feb. 22 and 23 in Hays.
