IN MEMORIAM:   Martha Davis

Martha Margaret (Klein) Davis, 97, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at the home of her daughter in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

She was born on Jan. 5, 1918, in Lipscomb, Texas to Rheinhard H. and Amelia (Stehr) Klein. She was the ninth of 10 children, all of whom preceded her in death.

Martha married Ural V. Davis on March 9, 1946, in Marion, Kansas. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage before his death July 6, 1994. Their years together included time in Kansas and Colorado. Since 2000, she has lived in the Memphis, Tennessee area with her daughter, Diane.

Martha grew up on a farm near Marion, and graduated from Marion High School in 1936. Marion was always “home.” She was known for her hard work, her determination, and her spirited sense of humor. She claimed that was part of growing up with seven brothers. She maintained an active interest in the lives of her siblings through the years and was the unofficial “family historian.”

Her thoroughness and organizational skills were demonstrated when she worked many years at the Colorado State University bookstore in the art supplies department. In her retirement years she would spend hours making scrapbooks for nursing homes and for children at her church. She enjoyed maintaining written correspondence with many friends. Through the years, she was affiliated with Baptist churches.

Martha is survived by two children: Diane (Ed) Perry of Olive Branch, Mississippi and William (Linda) Davis of Independence, Missouri; four grandchildren: Rena (Gary) Vest of Cordova, Tennessee, Brian (Melissa) Davis of Brighton, Colorado, Amy (Daniel) Snead of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Janelle (Brian) Chandler of Seattle, Washington; and by six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. One son, Robert, died shortly after his birth.

Graveside services will be held at a later date with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Goff, Kansas.
