Martha McCloud

Martha S. McCloud, 92, of Newton, died March 5 at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

Born Dec. 2, 1918, in Hillsboro, to Henry S. and Sarah (Flaming) Schroeder, she was the first baby born at the former Salem Hospital.

She grew up on a farm south of Hillsboro, moving with her family to Newton as a child. She graduated in 1937 from Newton High School.

She married Leason H. “Pete” McCloud on July 4, 1942, in Salina. After Pete’s retirement from Continental Air Lines, they lived in Marion for 28 years before returning to Newton five years ago.

Her parents; a son, Timothy; brothers Menno, Pete, and Leonard; and sisters Freida Franz, Hilda Evans, and Augusta Penner preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband Leason “Pete” of Newton; a son, Michael of Ankeny, Iowa; a daughter, Joan of Kansasville, Wisc.; a brother, Arlo Schroeder of Valley Center; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Strassburg Baptist Church of Marion and the Chapel of Presbyterian Manor in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E Broadway St, Newton KS 67114.
