Marion lost a beloved member of the community on Aug. 15, 2014. Mary Katherine Quinn Costello passed away peacefully in the early morning hours at St. Luke Living Center, because of complications from a stroke suffered the week before. In her final hours, as in the rest of her life, Mary was surrounded by loving family and friends.

Mary was born in 1925 in Wichita to George and Betty Quinn. Mary is survived by her brother, Col. George L. “Pat” Quinn and his wife Amy, of Phoenix, Arizona. Mary and Pat were very close throughout their lives. 

She attended East High and Wichita State University, where she earned a degree in economics. In 1947, she married Edward Costello and they moved to Topeka where Ed attended Washburn Law School. In 1949, they moved to Marion where they lived for the rest of their lives. She was vice president and a member of the board of Tampa State Bank. Mary also worked as a social worker in Marion.

Mary was a devout member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and active in the Altar Society. She was a past school board president of USD 408. She was active in the Marion County Democratic Central Committee. She was a longtime member of PEO, and was recognized as a Golden Girl in 2014. She was also a member of Twentieth Century. Mary was an avid bridge player and member of several bridge clubs. 

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Ed and a son, Kevin. Mary is survived by six children: Patrick Costello of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Cathleen McNamara of Overland Park, Kansas; Chris Costello of Marion, Kansas; Teresa Perky of Overland Park, Kansas; Barbara Loehr of Overland Park, Kansas; and Mickey Lundy of Marion, Kansas. She is survived by a brother, Pat Quinn of Phoenix, Arizona; seventeen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Mary was very close with her children and they continue to be a tight-knit group.

The rosary was recited Sunday evening and the funeral Mass was celebrated Monday morning at the Holy Family Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Marion Advancement Campaign (MAC) in Mary’s name, in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion KS 66861.
