Maxine Stockebrand

Maxine Helen Sutton Stockebrand, 93, Peabody, died Sept. 27.

Born Oct. 19, 1915, in Salina, to Lewis Messner and Elizabeth Smith Sutton, she grew up in Salina, graduate from Salina High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1937 in biology from Kansas Wesleyan University.

She taught at Monument and Republic high schools where she met her husband, Norman Ray (Joe) Stockebrand. They were married Aug. 17, 1941, in Salina.

The family lived in Wichita after Joe’s discharge from the U.S. Army. They moved to Peabody in 1947 and Maxine taught physical education at Peabody Junior and Senior High School from 1958 to 1971.

Her husband and a grandson, Bradley Alan Lewis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Beth Brown of Elkins W. Va., Patricia Becker of Olathe, and Jo Lynn Lewis of Wichita; a sister, Sheila Schmidt of Madison, S.D.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Peabody United Methodist Church.

A private, family burial is planned a Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church choir.
