After the Marion County Record announced that the Kansas attorney general’s office has accepted the request made by Marion City Attorney Dan Baldwin to investigate the possible violation of a law by Marion Mayor Mary Olson, Olson released this statement Friday through her attorney, Tim Hodge, of Newton.

“After my attorney contacted the attorney general’s office Thursday, March 25, 2010, I have confirmed for myself that their office will be conducting an investigation involving me,” Olson said. “While the investigation is pending, I unfortunately cannot comment on the issues surrounding it.

“I am confident, however, that it will not indicate that I am liable for any wrongdoing. During the investigation, I will cooperate to the best of my ability while honoring my constitutional rights.

“I regret being precluded from participating in the candidate forum a few weeks ago. Given the surprising circumstance and at the advice of my attorney, however, it was determined I could not participate. I also hoped that this investigation will be completed prior to the election, but my counsel has indicated that it most likely won’t be wrapped up by that time.

“At this time, I am focusing on the campaign and the issues facing Marion, Kan. I thank all of you for the support you’ve given me and welcome your comments and questions regarding our city.

“I remain a confident, active, and able mayoral incumbent and will work for Marion’s bright future.

“Thank you. Mayor Mary Olson.”

During a special city council meeting March 12, Baldwin announced he would seek an investigation by the attorney general’s office and would submit information for review regarding possible malicious circulation of false rumors regarding financial status.

When contacted March 23, Ashley Anstaett, director of communications for Kansas Attorney General Steve Six, told the Record that the attorney general had accepted the matter for investigation and review, and Kansas Bureau of Investigation would conduct an investigation.

The election of mayor and two Marion City Council positions will be Tuesday.
