Mermis joins Marion police force

Staff writer

A new officer recently joined the Marion Police Department. Patrolman Tyler Mermis started about a month and one-half ago.

“I want to be a positive role model, and to, of course, help the public,” Mermis said.

The Great Bend native spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Singapore, Malaysia, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Somalia, and Australia.

“I was in a special operations capable unit,” Mermis said.

He graduated from Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in 2000, in the same class as assistant police chief Chad Johanning.

He has worked for the Great Bend Police Department, Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office, as a canine handler in Stafford County, and served as assistant police chief in Kinsley.

His duties in Marion include patrolling the city, responding to those in need of help, enforcing traffic laws, and generally looking out for the security of people.

He enjoys the outdoors and is excited to be in Marion.

“It’s going to be an awesome place to raise my family,” Mermis said.

He is engaged to Melissa Kuhn of Kinsley and has three children: Blaine, Bryce, and Brynn.
