MES sixth graders talk car safety

Marion Elementary School sixth grade students participated Thursday in a car safety class instead of the regular scheduled physical education class.

Sondra Mayfield, director of Safe Kids, and Midway Motors’ Chad Funk, Garth Mock, and Travis Shaw collaborated in an hour-long presentation about car and seatbelt safety.

Students learned statistics and participated in various activities.

The message that was portrayed to the sixth grade is that students who are 11 and 12 years of age are known as the “safest generation.”

This is the first generation expected to be in car seats and booster seats, as well as always being in the back seat.

The students said the highlight of the presentation was seeing an airbag deployed. Other topics were airbag safety, appropriate ages for front seat passengers, car safety milestones, and the On-Star program.

Students also were active in a relay which incorporated fastening a seatbelt.
