MES students win engineering contest

Three Marion Elementary School students swept the sailboat race Feb. 26 at the University of Kansas Engineering Expo.

Fourth-grader Devin Hamm’s ship was the fastest, while fifth-graders Nathan Baldwin and Tori Smith took silver and bronze respectively.

The sailboat competitors created their sea-faring vessels out of recycled materials and received style points for designing their boats with an Egyptian motif.

The Marion County competitors each studied sailboats manufacturing in an attempt to make the fastest boat.

Marion County Extended Learning Program teacher Sherri Sells took elementary and middle school students from the Marion, Peabody-Burns, and Goessell school districts to Lawrence for the expo. The students participated in a variety of engineering, math, and science related contests.
